Football season is finally here.
After an offseason in which a new coach, Karl Dorrell, took over
the program, the UCLA football team will begin practicing this
week.
“We have a talented group of players,” Dorrell said
in a statement. “It is our job as coaches, now that we all
have seen the players perform in person, to identify those who we
think can best help the team be successful and continue to
implement the new systems.”
The team will report to UCLA on Tuesday. Orientation and light
one-a-day practices will be held on campus Wednesday, Thursday and
Friday. Friday afternoon, the Bruins will travel to Cal State
Fullerton and begin workouts Aug. 16.
The Bruins will remain at Cal State Fullerton through Aug. 23,
when there will be a scrimmage.

Marcedes Lewis, who played both football and basketball this
season, has decided to play just football.
Lewis told the Orange County Register that he was concerned the
travel and time commitment of playing two sports hurt his grades
during his freshman year.
“It was a tough decision for him, but we basically decided
it was too much time out of school and too much work,”
Lewis’ mother, Yvonne, told the Register.
“He was getting B-minuses, and that’s not
acceptable. He is going to focus more now on football and
class.”
In football, Lewis played all 12 games as a tight end and caught
six passes for 51 yards. In basketball, Lewis played only seven
games, registering a total of 26 minutes and nine points.
