Bruin players picked on second day of MLB draft

After no Bruins were drafted on Day 1 of the MLB Draft for the
first time since 1995, three current Bruins were chosen on Day 2,
and a UCLA recruit was drafted, as well.

Mike Kunes was the highest Bruin drafted when the San Francisco
Giants chose him in the 23rd round. The left-handed starting
pitcher was the 693rd pick overall.

Right-hander Chris Cordeiro was drafted by the Texas Rangers in
the 29th round. The junior closer was the 856th pick overall and
has indicated that he will come back next season due to his low
selection.

Casey Janssen, a right-handed starting pitcher, was drafted in
the 49th round by the Baltimore Orioles. Janssen was the 1,435th
pick.

MLB.com’s scouting reviews call Janssen “Tall, lean,
with a well proportioned body.

“Built like Orel Hershiser. (He has an) occasional Major
League fastball with good tailing, sink action, good rotation on
both curveball and slider. Change-up has good sink. Around plate
with pitches. Quick move to first base. Chance to be good
sinker-baller.”

Janssen was tied for fifth in the Pac-10 with 72 strikeouts but
went 6-6 with an ERA of 5.88.

Kunes finished the season with a 5-2 record and 62 strikeouts,
but compiled a 6.81 ERA.

Cordeiro had a 4.62 ERA and four saves.

Brant Rustich was the Bruin recruit that was drafted. He went in
the 45th round to the Minnesota Twins, and was the 1,368th pick
overall.

UCLA head coach Gary Adams indicated last week that Rustich
would likely come to UCLA since he was drafted in the later
rounds.
