No decision has been made about the future of Gary Adams,
UCLA’s head baseball coach. He had not met with Athletic
Director Dan Guerrero as of Tuesday.
There has been speculation that Adams would be fired after 29
years at the helm of UCLA due to his team’s poor performance
over the last three seasons.
Arizona head coach Andy Lopez, a friend of Guerrero’s
since the two were baseball teammates at UCLA in the 1970s, has
been mentioned as a possible successor. The Wildcats’ season
ended just four days ago with a playoff loss to San Diego.
UCLA Sports Information Director Marc Dellins confirmed that
Adams met with Ken Weiner, the associate athletic director who
oversees the baseball program. Adams called it a “debriefing
meeting.”
About the evaluation of Adams, Dellins said “the process
is ongoing.”
The UCLA baseball team has not qualified for the postseason
since 2000, when it lost to eventual College World Series champion
Louisiana State in the regional finals.
The Bruins are 84-93 since 2000 after a 28-31 finish this
season.
Twelve UCLA baseball players were taken in the 2000 MLB draft,
including several recruits.
In Adams’s career as a Bruin, he has compiled a 940-793-7
record, but has failed to win an NCAA championship and has made the
World Series just once.
Despite the lack of a strong winning tradition, Adams has put 37
Bruins in the major leagues, more than any other active coach and
second all-time.
