Marcin Matkowski, fresh off Monday’s heartbreaking loss to
Vanderbilt’s Chad Harris in the NCAA semifinals, lost
Thursday in the second round of the NCAA singles tournament, 6-1,
6-3, to Washington’s Alex Vlaski.
It was the third meeting of the season between No. 24 Matkowski
and No. 10 Vlaski. Matkowski had won the previous two
meetings, the first a 6-2, 6-2 victory at UCLA on April 12, and the
second a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the Pac-10 championship match on April
27.
Even with the loss, Matkowski’s season isn’t over
yet. He and doubles partner Rodrigo Grilli received news Thursday
that they had been inserted into the NCAA doubles draw because of
the withdraw of Texas team Jean Simon and Jose Zhari. Matkowski and
Grilli defeated Miami’s Andrew Golub and Colin Purcell, 6-2,
6-2.
In the second round of the 32 team draw, Grilli and Matkowski
will face Michael Kogan and Victor Romero of Tulane today. The time
of the match has not been determined yet.
