No. 1 Arizona and No. 2 UCLA will play against each other today,
but the game between the two best teams in softball won’t
matter as much as it usually does.
With three games left in the season, UCLA’s chances at the
Pac-10 title are slim. A conference title for the Bruins (43-5,
15-3 Pac-10) would depend on two things. Firstly, UCLA would need
to sweep Arizona (48-4, 17-1) and No. 15 Arizona State. Secondly,
Arizona would have to lose both games to No. 8 Washington, since
Arizona holds the head-to-head record tiebreaker over the
Bruins.
When the Wildcats came to Easton Stadium back on April 5 and 6,
they swept the Bruins 3-0 and 5-1.
But Arizona isn’t looking at today’s game against
UCLA as anything extraordinary.
“Every Pac-10 game is important,” Arizona coach Mike
Candrea said. “All of them.”
The Bruins will face Arizona State on Saturday in a doubleheader
which starts at 7 p.m.
The NCAA regional brackets will be announced on Sunday at 7 p.m.
on ESPNEWS.
