The No. 13 UCLA women’s golf team took home the bronze
medal from the Pac-10 Championships at a muddy and cold Trysting
Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Oregon.Â
The team finished the tournament at 38-over-par, 10 shots back
of first-place California and five shots back of second-place
Arizona. Cal’s Vikki Laing was crowned the individual
champion, finishing the three-round tournament at even par.
Individually for the Bruins, junior Hana Kim led UCLA in scoring
for the second consecutive tournament at Trysting Tree, placing in
a tie for fifth at 5-over-par.
Kim and sophomore Charlotte Mayorkas were tied for eighth place
after two rounds, but Kim’s final round 1-over 73, the
third-lowest score of the day, was good enough to vault her into
fifth place. Mayorkas’ final round of 80 slid her down into a
tie for 16th along with teammate Melissa Martin, both of whom
finished at 12-over-par.
Freshman Susie Mathews finished in a tie for 21st place at
15-over-par. Mathews finished her final round with a string of 14
consecutive pars for a 3-over 75. Junior Gina Umeck finished the
tournament in a tie for 26th place at 17-over-par. Junior Krystal
Shearer, playing as an individual competitor, finished in a tie for
19th.
The Bruins never mustered a charge toward the top of the
leaderboard in the three days of competition. After round one, the
Bruins found themselves staring up from third place and faced with
a six-shot deficit to Cal that they would never make up.
In fourth place entering the final round, UCLA posted a 304 and
waited in the clubhouse for the teams above them to finish up play.
USC’s top ranked player and its last golfer to finish,
Mikaela Parmlid, bogeyed the 18th hole to give UCLA third place by
a single shot.
