Chinese mayor dismissed after SARS outbreak

Beijing’s mayor, Meng Xueong, was dismissed for the
city’s handling of the severe acute respiratory syndrome
outbreak.

Meng failed to provide timely and accurate reports on the
progress of SARS which contributed to the rapid spreading of the
disease throughout Asia.

The first known SARS case occurred in China’s Guangdong
province in November 2002 but was not disclosed until February.

Meng was also dismissed from his top position in the Communist
Party after China announced an increase in total SARS cases from 37
to 346, with 79 fatalities.

Worldwide, there have been over 3,800 cases of SARS reported,
resulting in 217 deaths, according to the World Health
Organization.
