Water polo wins two, stays No. 1

The UCLA women’s water polo team solidified its No. 1
national ranking with a pair of home victories over No. 18 Brown on
Friday and No. 6 San Diego State on Saturday.

Eight Bruins scored in the UCLA’s (16-3, 5-2 MPSF) 12-1
blowout of Brown, including Kelly Rulon, who had three goals.
Natalie Golda and Devon McIntyre had two goals each.

Jaime Hipp and Tahlia Kerr split the day in goal, allowing one
goal on eight shots. Their momentum continued into the next day, as
the Bruins trounced the Aztecs 10-2.

Kristyn Pulver, Golda, and Maureen Flanagan accounted for six of
UCLA’s 10 goals.

Rowers win Hock-Hjelm Cup

The UCLA women’s rowing team defeated Loyola Marymount at
the Karen Hock-Hjelm Cup in Marina Del Rey, Calif. on Saturday.

In the race, the UCLA varsity eight finished in 6:29.7, narrowly
beating LMU, which finished in 6:33.3. The second UCLA varsity
eight squad finished in third, with a time of 7:02.5.

In the novice race, both of the Bruins’ squads finished
ahead of the Lions. The UCLA novice eight finished in first with a
time of 6:49.4, and the UCLA second novice eight finished in second
at 7:17.3. LMU’s novice eight finished in 7:20.1.

Women’s tennis beats Arizona, ASU

The women’s tennis team successfully defended its home court
this weekend, sending both Arizona and No. 8 Arizona State home
with 6-1 defeats.

The No. 12 Bruins’ victory over the Sun Devils marked
their first win over a top-ten team this season.

UCLA was able to win the doubles point in both matches,
something it has struggled to do all season. The freshmen tandem of
Jackie Carleton and Feriel Esseghir turned in two victories at the
No. 1 doubles position to highlight the Bruins’ strongest
back-to-back doubles performances of the season.

No. 10 Sara Walker did not play Friday against Arizona, but
returned to the line-up against Arizona State and recorded a 7-6(6)
6-1 victory over No. 14 Adria Engel.

The Bruins will be home again next weekend, hosting No. 4
California at 1:30 on Friday and No. 2 Stanford at noon on
Saturday. Both matches will be played at the Los Angeles Tennis
Center.

Men’s golf fourth at Duck
Invitational

The No. 9 UCLA men’s golf team finished fourth at the
Oregon Duck Invitational held at Eugene Country Club on March
24-25.

The squad compiled a combined three-round score of 874, 10-over
par, and finished 16 shots behind first-place teams Arizona and
Washington (858, six-under par).

Individually for the Bruins, junior Travis Johnson and sophomore
John Poucher tied for 14th overall at three-over par. Junior John
Merrick tied for 23rd at four-over par, and junior Steve Conway and
sophomore Steve Jones tied for 34th place at six-over
par. Junior Roy Moon rounded out the Bruins’ squad with
a seven-over par tournament, finishing in 39th place.

The Bruins, winners of three straight tournaments heading into
the tournament, combated difficult weather conditions during the
two days of play. The adverse weather, coupled with a
strategic golf course, led to higher scores throughout the
field.

Women’s golf hosts Bruin Classic

The UCLA women’s golf team, ranked No. 14 in the country,
hosted the Pioneer Electronics Bruin Classic at Robinson Ranch Golf
Club in Santa Clarita March 24-26.

The UCLA Gold Team finished seventh in the tournament, compiling
a score of 932 over three rounds. UCLA’s B Team finished
in sixth place at 926. Pepperdine University captured top

ahead of USC.

Sophomore Charlotte Mayorkas continues to have an outstanding
year, finishing in sixth place overall and only three shots off the
lead.  Junior Krystal Shearer of the Gold Team finished in
11th place at 11-over par.

UCLA’s B Team fielded four individuals in the top
40. Hana Kim led the B Team with an 11th place finish, and
Susie Matthews (tied for 23rd), Bridget Dwyer (tied for 28th) and
Saki Uechi (tied for 39th) all had strong showings.

Baseball begins Pac-10 season well

Bruin baseball is suddenly on fire. UCLA has won four of its
last six games, including two of three against No. 17 Arizona 6-4,
7-5, 10-12 in the Pac-10 season opener.

Despite the strong start to Pac-10 play, the non-conference
struggles continued to plague the Bruins over the week. Tuesdays
have been the bane of the Bruins’ season, and it showed last
Tuesday, as UCLA dropped to 0-6 in midweek games with a 2-0 loss to
Long Beach State.

In the first game of the Arizona series, senior Chris Cordeiro
started his first game of the year and responded with four innings
pitched, seven hits and one earned run. Senior Doug Silva relieved
Cordeiro and allowed only two hits and no runs in five innings for
the victory. Brandon Averill’s two-run shot in the bottom of
the seventh proved to be the margin of victory.

The Bruins then won the second game behind the stellar pitching
performance of sophomore Wes Whisler, who threw seven innings,
giving up only two hits and one unearned run.

UCLA committed five errors in a narrow 12-10 loss on Sunday,
leaving its overall record at 16-16.
