Five softball teams will come together this weekend to help
commemorate a Bruin great.
UCLA will open its season with the second annual Stacy Winsberg
Memorial Tournament, which starts today, at Easton Stadium at 9
a.m.
“Everybody will take a moment to remember her,”
Bruin head coach Sue Enquist said. “She emulated the Bruin
spirit.”
Winsberg played second base and the outfield for the
Bruins’ first three NCAA Championship teams during the
1982-85 seasons. She also played on the U.S. National Team in the
1988 Seoul Olympics, before softball was a medal-winning sport.
Winsberg died from a cerebral blood clot on Dec. 12, 2001
following a battle with lung cancer. She was 38 years old.
“Everybody has an opportunity to remember her, or learn
about her,” Enquist said.
Every Bruin on the field will wear a sweatband with the No. 13
on it, which was Winsberg’s number while at UCLA.
The Bruins will play five games over the three-day Stacy
Winsberg Memorial Tournament.
No. 1 UCLA first takes to the field today at 1:30 p.m. for the
first game of a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount.
“LMU always gives us a good game,” Enquist said.
“They don’t fold.”
Saturday, the Bruins will play two games, the first against No.
10 Cal State Fullerton at 10:30 a.m., and the second against No. 22
Alabama, at 1 p.m.
On Sunday, the tournament concludes with UCLA facing Cal State
Northridge at 2 p.m.
“It’s looking really good, I’m excited to
start the season,” freshman catcher and first baseman Emily
Zaplatosch said. “We need to step up and play well early in
the season, as well as later.”
The tournament kicks off today with a doubleheader between
Alabama and Cal State Fullerton at 9 a.m.
