when was the last time you started a movie that never ended or
listened to a cd that just kept going going no breaks but a
continuous flow of thought like the continuous flow of life and i
am guessing no certain that you never have experienced this because
this type of art does not exist and i ask why not if art is to
imitate life then when was the last time living turned a page ended
a chapter paused when the song ended took a commercial break no no
no you see todays pop culture machine is a faucet dump pouring
homogeneously clean adulterated ideologies onto over into our not
so homogeneously clean adulterated fantasies for no other purpose
than to fit each one of us cookie cutter style wedged into an egg
carton no one different all with matching bowties and top hats
molded to enjoy the twenty three minute laugh tracked sitcom with
seven minutes of commercials and no point other than that highest
noble purpose of entertainment but none of us are truly entertained
like when your friend threw his bike down and dove into a mud
puddle and proceed to a rub a dub dub wash himself with dirt and
you laughed so hard you fell in a bush got out later still crying
from laughter your own our own laughter not mechanically reproduced
which is all pop media art appears to be in this age of consumerism
where individual tastes matter as little to market researchers as
anyone of yall care that i hate cilantro but i really do and no one
seems at all concerned by this but why should they be when singular
happiness is irrelevant and only general mediocrity is important
ring ring ding i hear the bells of the conformity chiming saying
time to eat its already noon no go to bed its after ten but i want
to sleep till noon and eat at midnight but my clock says its not
time never enough time they are just four letters to rule the world
but rule it they do so that five minute songs are deemed
inaccessible for radio play but three will do just fine like the
two hour film or the hour long weeknight drama program with the
multi gendered multi racial lawyer cop doctors with the furrowed
brows and intense eyes whose problems are solved in that single
hour plus commercials of course of course but never an hour and
five minutes or twenty three minutes to find a solution and the
same for reality shows but i dont think they are much at all like
reality at least not mine because mine is not a vehicle for
commercial endorsement at least i hope not as i shamefully take off
my gap embroidered underwear but its not the sole goal of our
existence nor should it be governed by technological restraints
like the forty minute record before the contemporary seventy minute
cd with the infinite minidisc looming ahead and all are shaping
artistic endeavours to fit the limitedness of our own abilities not
trying to expand the human mind beyond even itself no instead close
shut slam the door of possibilities and stare at the wall of lost
dreams but soon we forget that songs can even exceed several
minutes movies can never end or that a book does not need chapters
as we begin to think within these confined walls and soon the
limitless human imagination will not be so infinite but tick tock
with the clock taking pauses for network ads and the world
possibilities will be the keyboard under my fingers with only
certain keys to type to express my thoughts when all i want is a
pen to scribble mindlessly or mindfully across an open sky not
worrying that the sky will end or the pen will run dry because if
it ends i will never know and no credits roll when all is over and
most of all certainly above all there will be no period to end this
life no single point signifying it is over and there should be none
as life is infinite so is art so are our minds and so it goes on
and on
