EH & S continues to test letter

The office of Environment, Health and Safety is conducting tests
on a powder-like substance contained in a letter sent to the
College of Letters and Science office Wednesday morning.

EH & S was called over and quickly confirmed the substance
was non-toxic, but final identification will not be available until
Monday, said Rick Greenwood, director of the office of EH &
S.

No one was harmed in the incident, but surrounding offices in
Murphy Hall were temporarily blocked off to prevent the possible
spread of contamination. University police is investigating the
origins of the letter, which was addressed to Life Sciences Dean
Fred Eiserling.

Study concerns heroin rehab

Drug users who inject heroin after completing 21-day methadone
programs or after being released from jail or prison may have a
high risk of overdose, according to UC San Francisco researchers.
The researchers explained that lowered tolerance levels in each of
these situations may increase overdose risk.

They added that being relatively younger, having been arrested
three or more times in the past year and drinking four or more
alcoholic drinks per day were also independently associated with
overdose in the last year.
