UCLA goes without wins in Canada

The UCLA men’s volleyball team failed to win a single
match at the University of Alberta Tournament in Edmonton.

On Friday, the Bruins lost their matches against Western Ontario
15-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-11 and against Saskatchewan 24-26,
16-25, 25-12, 25-20, 15-12. UCLA also lost Saturday 25-20, 21-25,
25-16, 25-19 to Manitoba.

But after a five-game loss to Alberta Saturday night, UCLA head
coach Scates was not too disappointed with his team’s overall
performance in the tournament.

The Canadian squads were ready to begin their seasons while the
Bruins were just beginning their preseason. Scates juggled his
lineups around and sacrificed wins for a chance to evaluate his
players.

“I didn’t give us much of a chance to win," Scates
said.

Scates was impressed by the play of highly-touted freshman David
Russell, who will compete for playing time at the opposite hitter
position.

“The first time I saw him play was yesterday,”
Scates said. “He looks like he has a lot of
promise.”

Junior outside hitter Cameron Mount and junior setter Rich
Nelson also stood out. The two were selected to the NCAA
All-Tournament team.
