L.A. Flute Quartet comes to Pasadena
The Los Angeles Flute Quartet will make their West Coast debut
with a recital, “Flute Fancies ““Â An Afternoon of
Flute Delights,” at 4 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church,
997 E. Walnut Street, Pasadena.
The woodwind ensemble, which has performed and recorded
throughout the United States, Europe, Australia and New Zealand,
consists of Pattl Evans, Colleen Carroll, Peter Sheridan and
Lisa-Maree Amos. The program includes Mozart’s Overture to
Marriage of Figaro, Schocker’s “Nymphs,”
Kuhlau’s Quartet in E Major, Bozza’s “Jour
d’ete a la Montagne,” Barbar’s Adagio and
Bach’s “Air on a G String.”

Novelist to speak at Skirball Center
Novelist Robert Stone, who received the Faulkner Foundation
Award for Best First Novel for his “Hall of Mirrors” in
1967, will read and speak at 7:30 p.m. May 30 at the Skirball
Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles.
Stone’s second book, “Dog Soldiers,” won the
National Book Award in 1975, and his latest novel, the New York
Times best-seller “Damascus Gate,” was a finalist for
the National Book Award.

Film students receive awards
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected 12
film students from eight U.S. universities to participate in a week
of industry-related activities and social events.
The film categories included alternative, animation,
documentary, narrative and honorary foreign film. In the animation
category, UCLA student Amy Winfrey won for her film, “The Bad
Plant,” and Jose Javier Martinez won for his
“Luz.”
The students will attend the Academy Awards ceremony on June 11,
when they will receive their gold, silver or bronze medals. Gold
medalists will receive $2,000, silver medalists will receive $1,500
and bronze medalists will receive $1,000.
The student Academy Awards were established by the Academy in
1972 to support and encourage excellence in filmmaking at the
collegiate level.
Hammer presents dialogues on Art
The Hammer Museum will present four artists who will discuss the
art they have created for the C.O.L.A. exhibition, at 7 p.m.
tonight at the museum.
“The Art of C.O.L.A.: Gallery Talks with the
Artists” program will include artists Nancy Buchanan, Barbara
Carrasco, Robbert Flick and Linda Nishio.

Bookstore holds Internet discussion
The Midnight Special Bookstore & Culture Center will present
a program on Internet and Web development at 7:30 p.m. tonight at
1318 Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica.
The session encourages more extensive Internet use. Each month,
topics related to design and implementation of Web sites are
discussed. Topics include homepage design, uploading instruction
and evaluations of graphical HTML tools.
