Two gun shots were fired at Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity in a
drive-by shooting on the 500 block of Gayley Avenue Monday
night.
No one was injured in the incident, as two shotgun blasts were
fired at about 10:45 p.m. into a bedroom and the charter room, both
on the second floor of the house facing Gayley Avenue.
The Los Angeles Police Department was the first agency to
respond to the emergency call from the fraternity and is
investigating the shooting. It has not released any details on the
incident. University police are assisting in the investigation.
The car is described by police as an early model vehicle. One
fraternity member said he saw a brown Buick sedan, said Pi Kappa
Alpha President Dominic Antenucci.
Police have not released a description of the suspects in the
case.
Fraternity members said they did not know of a possible motive
for the shooting.
“It’s shocking that something like this could happen
in Westwood. It’s hard to talk about it,” Antenucci
said.
University police plan to conduct extra patrolling around the
house, said Nancy Greenstein, director of community services for
UCPD.
“As we go into the weekend we’ll make that a
priority,” she said.
Greenstein added that this incident is the first drive-by
shooting near campus in recent years.
“I haven’t the slightest idea why it
happened,” said Berky Nelson, director of the Center for
Student Programming. “In all the years I’ve been here
I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Nelson said he visited the house Tuesday and noted the damage to
the windows and blinds.
“I’m just thankful that no one was hurt,”
Nelson said.
Bob Naples, assistant vice chancellor for student and campus
life, also could not recall any similar incidents in the recent
past. He said the university will cooperate with police in their
investigation, though he has no reason to believe that students
were involved in the shooting at this point.
Nelson agreed: “I just can’t imagine anyone from
UCLA doing this.”
