Crimewatch
Burglary
Burglars had easy work last week, with three on-campus computer
burglaries that left no sign of forced entry.
The stolen merchandise in these incidents alone totaled
$7,611.
The week was not so fruitful for car thieves, though, who made
only one attempt at grand theft auto, which proved unsuccessful in
the end. The suspect did manage to get away with stereo equipment,
CDs, rollerblades and a gym bag, all totalling $819.
Thieves also stripped cars of another stereo worth $1,500, a
license plate and hubcaps. Parking permits were a favorite, with
seven reported missing over the past week.
There was good news, however, for some car owners whose vehicles
had been stolen. University police recovered three stolen cars
during the past week.
Battery
Seven incidents of battery were reported last week, with one
report coming from as far away as Monterey Park.
In the hospital emergency room, a man had to be restrained when
he brandished a gun and knife to workers there.
Disturbing the Peace
Twenty-seven counts of disturbing the peace helped keep UCPD
officers busy last week, with several calls involving more than
just breaking up parties.
UCPD officers were called when a driver frustrated at parking
rates in Westwood refused to pay his parking charge in a structure
on Broxton.
Sunday, several Westwood residents had some fun throwing water
balloons off the roof of their building, but their fun ended when
neighbors called in UCPD.
Four to five suspects skateboarding outside the Center for
Health Sciences tried to make their sport more exciting last
Wednesday by harassing nearby pedestrians.
Administrators also asked UCPD officers to keep the peace with
their presence while 21 workers were laid off in the UCLA
storehouse last Tuesday
The high note of the week, however, came when UCPD officers
stopped a group of seven USC students carrying cans of spray paint
seen running eastbound on Westwood Avenue. Luckily, the students
were stopped before they could cause any damage.
