Win Karaoke jam contest

This Saturday, to celebrate Adam Sandler’s newest film "The
Wedding Singer" (which will be released Feb. 13) New Line Cinema,
Star 98.7 FM, Pioneer and Planet Hollywood are sponsoring a
"Karaoke Jam" at the Santa Monica Place across from the Third St.
Promenade.

Third prize is a dinner for four at Planet Hollywood, second
prize is a private screening of "The Wedding Singer" for the winner
and 50 of his or her friends. And first prize is a Valentine’s
dinner and limousine ride plus a chance to compete in the regional
finals happening in Los Angeles on Feb. 1. The national finals will
be in Orlando, Florida on Feb. 8, where Adam Sandler will be
present. And the grand prize is $5,000 worth of studio time for the
winner to record their own demo tape.

Film fest plays Skirball

A film festival at the Skirball Cultural Center entitled
"Vaudeville: Jewish Performers In Early Sound Film" runs from Jan.
22 to Feb 22. The festival pays tribute to Jewish vaudville writers
and actors, a rich source for material for Hollywood’s first sound
films. The schedule includes short screenings, including "The Jazz
Singer" starring Al Jolson and "Popping the Cork" starring Milton
Berle. Admission is between $6 and $25.

Fowler bead exhibit opens

On Sun., Jan. 25, the Fowler Museum of Cultural History opens
their newest exhibit, "Beads Body and Soul: Art and Light in the
Yoruba Universe" with lectures by visiting curators. The program,
titled "The Bead Goes On: Colors and Cultural Ideas Among
Yoruba-speaking Peoples," begins at 2 p.m.
