O’Bannon appearing on TV
Ex-UCLA basketball team captain Ed O’Bannon will make an
appearance as himself in an episode of "Unhappily Every After."
O’Bannon will be the professional commentator for one of Ryan’s
(Kevin Connolly) games. The show airs Sunday at 8:30 p.m. on The WB
Network.
Book, music
festivals featured on Third Street
The Santa Monica Book and Music Festival takes the main stage on
the Promenade along with Barnes and Noble’s Banned Books and Music
Festival on Sept. 27 and 28. Both festivals feature musical
entertainment, book readings, signings and spoken word
performances. The Santa Monica festival celebrates the diversity of
literature and music while the banned books event celebrates
freedom of speech and First Amendment rights.
Finian’s Rainbow
Reprise! Broadway’s Best in Concert makes its second appearance
at UCLA’s Freud Playhouse with the 1947 musical "Finian’s Rainbow"
Sept. 24 to Sept. 28. Musically directed by Peter Matz and starring
Rex Smith and Andrea Marcovicci, Reprise! aims to bring an
L.A.-centered troupe of television stars to the stage using
low-cost sets through this non-profit organization. David Zippel
and Friends take the stage on Sept. 29, celebrating the work of
this Tony Award-winning lyricist of "Hercules" and "City of
Angels." Special guests include Jason Alexander, Linda Hart and
others. Tickets are $50 for both events. For more info call

$1 million given to film school
The George Burns Trust has donated $1 million to the UCLA School
of Theater, Film and Television. The money will be divided into two
endowments: the George Burns and Gracie Allen
Scholarships/Fellowships in Comedy and the George Burns Endowment
Fund. A campus sound stage facility will be named the George Burns
Sound Stage in memory of the performer and in recognition of the
gift.
UCLA professor’s film opens today
"The Lay of the Land," a new film written by UCLA acting
professor Mel Shapiro, opens today. The movie, a comedy about love,
marriage and lust, stars Tyne Daley, Sally Kellerman and Ed Begley
Jr.
