Monday, 7/21/97 Dollar accepts UC Irvine offer for assistant
coaching position BASKETBALL: Former Bruin brings invaluable
expertise to Anteaters
By Stan Johnson Jr. Daily Bruin Senior Staff Cameron Dollar,
former UCLA point guard and a member of the 1995 Bruin championship
team, recently accepted the assistant coach position at UC Irvine.
In last week’s paper, the Daily Bruin printed that Dollar will be
coaching at Pepperdine University. That information was wrong. It
has been confirmed that Dollar will be an assistant coach for UC
Irvine’s mens basketball team. While former teammate Charles
O’Bannon will be playing for the Detroit Pistons, Dollar was not
drafted and decided to accept the coaching position at Irvine.
During his tenure at UCLA, Dollar’s contributions to the basketball
team were impressive. In his senior year, Dollar broke the Bruin
single-season steal record with 82 steals and finished the season
with 451 assists. In addition, Dollar helped the Bruins reach the
Elite Eight of the NCAA Championships. At UCLA, Dollar ranks ninth
on both the career and steals list, behind former NBA great Bill
Walton. Cameron Dollar will certainly be a great asset to UC
Irvine’s basketball team. His work ethic and knowledge of the game
should make UC Irvine a force to be reckoned with. One thing is
certain: Dollar should be able to tutor the Anteaters’ point guards
in his specialty — saving the day with last minute game-winning
shots.
