For the third straight year, Pauley Pavilion will play host to
the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Challenge.
Dubbed as "the finest in high school basketball" by its
organizers, the all-day event on Monday features Division I state
champion Crenshaw (ranked second in Cal-Hi state poll) against
Division II state champion Dominguez (ranked ninth).
Dominguez is led by McDonald’s All-American candidate Kenny
Brunner and juniors Jason Thomas and Tayshaun Prince. Crenshaw, the
1996 Nike National Prep Classic winner, will counter with the
backcourt of Kevin Bradley and Alastair Faux.
One of the four teams in the nation to defeat Dominguez this
year, Long Beach Poly (top-ranked in Division I AA), the school
that produced Tyus Edney, will face Antelope Valley.
Jeff Trepagnier and Diondre Moore of Compton (ranked first in
Division II AA), the other area school to defeat Dominguez, will go
into battle against Tulane signee Solomon Hughes who leads Bishop
Montgomery (ranked second in Division III A).
On the floor that he could soon call home if he signs with UCLA,
All-American Baron Davis, also a McDonald’s candidate, will steer
Crossroads (ranked first in Division IV A) against Dino Tanner and
Inglewood (ranked fourth in Division II AA).
Jarron and Jason Collins, the twin towers of Division III state
champion Harvard-Westlake (ranked first in Division III A), will
take on city-section power Fairfax with juniors Chris Osborn and
Flint Boyd at the helm.
UCLA prospect Billy Knight of Westchester (ranked 16th in the
Cal-Hi poll) and junior Tony Bland will take on super sophomore
Jason Kapono and Artesia. Artesia is top-ranked in Division II
A.

In girls’ play, top ranked Brea-Olinda will take on Victorville
Victor Valley and Dominguez (ranked sixth in Division II A) will
take on Inglewood.
