Despite losing Olympic gold medalist Annette Salmeen, the UCLA
women’s swim team expects to improve on last year’s 11th-place NCAA
finish.

"Our goal is to do the work with excellence and we can finish
top five (in the NCAA)," first-year assistant coach, Byron Davis
said.

On Sunday at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena, the
Bruins got themselves on the right track to do just that.

UCLA (2-0) swam victoriously against the University of
Nevada-Reno (2-2) and UC Santa Barbara (1-2) in their first dual
meet of the season.

"The meet was a good learning experience, because against two
teams it’s kind of hard," co-captain Kiley Ames-Klein said. "There
was a lot of competition and a lot of enthusiasm and support. While
the freshmen stepped up, the upper-class led the way."

Junior co-captain Lindsay Etter, the school record-holder in
both the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke, won the two events
with times of 1:03.98 and 2:16.49 respectively. In the 200, she was
more than five seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

Two-time All-American Cindy Bertelink placed second in the 200
individual medley.

Jill Jenkins, also a junior two-time All-American, placed second
in both the 100-meter freestyle and the 200-meter butterfly with
times of 53.52 and 2:06.85.

"Jenkins is, once again, a big stud," head coach Cyndi Gallagher
said. "She can really get up and race when she wants to."

Sophomore Erinn Noeth and freshman Ashley Haendiges finished in
the top two spots of the 1000-meter freestyle, while sophomore
Jenny Poree won the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:06.77.
Sophomore All-American Amanda Hall finished third with a time of
2:07.68, while freshman Amber Wines finished second to Etter in the
100-meter breaststroke at 1:05.07.

"The freshmen did really good," Gallagher said.

This was evidenced by Keiko Price’s strong showings of the day.
The freshman won the 50-meter freestyle in 24.41, placed third in
the 100-meter fly in 58.72, and was a member of the victorious
200-meter medley and 200-meter freestyle relay teams.

Rounding out the medley relay team, which finished in 1:47.86,
were Poree, Etter and freshman Jaclyn Castellano.

Taking second in the medley, in 1:48.04, were Hall, Wines,
Jenkins and sophomore All-American Susan Trainer. The 200-meter
freestyle team, finishing in 1:36.52, consisted of Jenkins, Trainer
and Castellano.

The divers also fared well. Under the tutelage of first-year
head coach Andy Kwan, the Bruins won the 1-meter and 3-meter
competitions.

Junior Rose Huelskamp won both events with marks of 262 points
and 283.10 points, respectively. Sophomore Laura Segundo placed
second in the 3-meter with 262 points, and third in the 1-meter
with 247.75.

"The girls did good for this point," Davis said. "But we want
them stronger on their turns and breakouts.

"They are getting better and better all the time, so we’ll see
where they’re at next weekend against Florida and the Arizona
schools."
