In your coverage of the protest in favor of race and gender
preferences, you claimed the protesters were engaged in civil
disobedience. The disobedience I agree with; however, the
protesters were far from civil.
These protesters shouted boos at students who were on their way
to class (making one wonder why the protesters came to college),
encouraged racism in society by calling on individuals to identify
with others based merely on skin color, changed vulgarities, called
for violence against Gov. Wilson, made obscene gestures at those
who disagreed with them, and disrupted the lives of thousands of
individuals breaking the law.
UCLA and all campus organizations should condemn the actions of
these protesters as unacceptable behavior for UCLA students.
Perhaps then, rational and balanced debate will replace the hatred
and intimidation practiced all too often on our campus.

Horey  refreshing change for better
I was just writing you guys to voice my appreciation for adding
Justin Horey to your Viewpoint staff.
Last year Viewpoint had a tendency to leave a rather sour taste
in my mouth. I knew that Brian Birkenstein was graduating and would
no longer be writing for Viewpoint. This left me with a looming
fear that Viewpoint would turn into a dark and scary place for
every embittered person to vent their hatred for the world.
My shining hope was that somebody who didn’t take themselves (or
their causes) quite so seriously would step up to the plate. Justin
Horey has done just that! Thanks a lot for keeping Viewpoint a
semihappy place for all readers.
