UCLA Racecar Photo

Above: The UCLA Society of Automotive Engineers built an
electric car with the help of the UCLA School of Engineering and
Applied Sciences, the UCLA Engineering Student Union and outside
contributors. The car uses two 12-volt batteries and a 24-volt DC
motor. It weighs less than 125 lbs. and can reach speeds of up to
35 mph. Seen here racing in the WINDFAIR ’96 Electrathon America
race in the town of Tehachapi, the UCLA team powered its creation
to finish second overall in the competition.

car to the race atop a Volkswagen Jetta.

Left: Wednesday night design meetings, including team members
Kevin Hendrickson, Asa Hammond, Wolfgang Fengler and Raymond Liu
(left to right), were where ideas were discussed and plans were
made for race day.

propelled by a 24-volt motor. A chain then links it to the rear
gears.
