USAC budget confusion

Thursday, May 2, 1996

Members of the United Students slate have charged that this
year’s undergraduate council, dominated by Students First! members,
has allocated half of its budget to only four student groups.

The Students First! slate counters that the number is closer to
18 percent.

The debate centers around an interpretation of numbers.

Supporters of this year’s council pointed out that of the
$188,308 student government has the authority to distribute, only
$33,799 went to the African Student Union, the Asian Pacific
Coalition, and the Chicana/o activist group MEChA.

Opponents from the United Students slate drew their figures from
the $74,496 given to all student groups. Of that share, $33,797 or
about 45 percent, went to the previously listed groups.

The remaining $113,812 left in the undergraduate government’s
budget this year was used to fund individual offices and their
activities.
