Candidate for External Vice President
External vice president candidate Christopher Hecht’s goals are
social  not political.
His main objective is to convince the university to allow the
sale of alcohol at the Rose Bowl during football games.
"I’m not advocating drinking, but this can be a great revenue
builder for the school," said Hecht, a member of the Bruin Vision
Slate. "Students and alumni both would be willing to pay a lot of
money for beer at the football games."
Although Hecht is sympathetic to political causes and believes
that issues such as affirmative action are germane to students, he
feels it’s more important to work directly on campus concerns.
"I think the student advocacy groups are doing a good enough job
advocating for these issues, but the council should do things that
directly help the students, such as getting academic course credit
for classes at the Wooden Center," he said.
When politics are the main focus of the undergraduate
government, the majority of students’ concerns tend to be ignored,
Hecht said. Instead, he plans to advocate for the Bruin Gold Card
to be used in Westwood stores and setting up a pub on campus.
Hecht has no previous experience with the council, but believes
that leadership experience does not equal ability.
"I really want to have the student government give something
positive and useful back to the students," Hecht said.
