Baseball intends to tame Lions
Pitchers look to avenge last year’s losses; team takes No. 5
spot over Stanford in poll

Riding on the high of last weekend’s two wins over Stanford, the
No. 5 UCLA baseball team will travel to Loyola Marymount today for
brief respite from the hectic Six-Pac schedule.
The Bruins will look to tee off on a Loyola pitching staff that
has posted a staggering team ERA of 10.56. The Lions (2-12) have
shut down, well, no one, allowing 10 or more runs in nine different
games.
UCLA (11-5) will probably send either Ryan O’Toole (1-0) or Matt
Klein (0-0) to the mound to try to avenge last year’s two losses to
the Lions.
Because of last year’s losses, and an 18-25 lifetime record
against the Lions, UCLA head coach Gary Adams is trying not to look
past this year’s team, although it appears to be one of the worst
that Loyola has fielded in years.
"We haven’t prepared for them very well in the past, and they’ve
beaten us," Adams said. "It’s not a matter of preparing for their
team in particular, but we need to be prepared to play up to our
own capabilities. We’ve given some games to them in the past, and
we need to avoid that this year."

Sophomore shortstop Troy Glaus injured his back during the
Stanford series, and is doubtful for the Loyola game. He will
probably rest until this weekend’s California series.
"We certainly don’t want to take any chances with him," Adams
said. "Unless some miracle happens, he won’t play against
Loyola."

UCLA’s handling of Stanford over the weekend caused the two
teams to flip-flop in Baseball America’s latest poll. UCLA moved
from No. 6 to No. 5, while Stanford fell one notch to No. 6. UCLA
remained at No. 11 in the Collegiate Baseball poll.
