Top-ranked UCLA softball showed Stanford no mercy Thursday
afternoon, shutting the Cardinal down, 11-1 and 10-0 in two
six-inning games at Easton Stadium.
Sophomore Alleah Poulson led the Bruin offense in the first game
with two walks, a double and a homerun with three runs scored.
Starting pitcher B’ann Burns held Stanford (10-26 overall, 1-17
Pac-10) to just four hits and did not allow a run until the top of
the sixth inning when Cardinal shortstop Summer Lee came home on an
error by UCLA second baseman Kelly Howard.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth and the Bruins up 8-1,
Stanford pitcher Angela Webb gave up a double to third baseman
Jennifer Brundage and a walk to Tanya Harding which was followed by
Poulson’s game-ending dinger to right.
With junior transfer Tanya Harding on the mound in the nightcap,
the Bruins got off to an early start, posting three runs in the
bottom of the first off four consecutive base hits, including a
two-run blast by Harding.
Webb was able to keep UCLA relatively quiet until the fifth
inning when the Bruins came alive on five consecutive base hits,
including back to back doubles by Howard, Ginny Mike, and Brundage.
Brundage then put the game away in the next inning with a single to
score right fielder Felicia Cruz.
"It’s nice to get out and score some runs," UCLA co-head coach
Sue Enquist said. "It wasn’t (a day) where I thought that we were
going to come out here and be on fire emotionally, it just wasn’t
going to happen."
The Bruins (33-2, 14-1) will host second-place California
Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
