Graduate election’s deadline extended
By Betty Song
In order to garner more applications for the Graduate Students
Association elective positions, the closure date for nominations
has been extended to Friday, April 14.
Originally, nominations for the association’s president, vice
president external and vice president internal were due last
Monday, the first day back from Spring Break. But the deadline was
extended to Friday to give students more time, according to
Commissioner of Elections and Appointments Allen Stout.
The decision was made during finals week of winter quarter when
only one person requested an application.
"There wasn’t much movement," Stout said. "It was the last week
of spring quarter and people were trying to get papers done and
finals. It was near spring break and there wasn’t anybody listening
— they were either not here (on campus) or in the library."
"(The extension) would give time to get nominations in and still
give me enough time to put things together for the election," Stout
added.
Although graduate election ballots were mailed to voters for the
past two years, a lack of funds has brought elections to campus
this year. They will be held on May 2 and 3, overlapping with the
undergraduate elections on May 3 and 4.
Students interested in running for any of the three offices can
get an application at the association’s office in 301 Kerckhoff
Hall. Ballot initiatives, student referenda and petitions to amend
the graduate student association constitution are also due on
Friday.
